The lament for the lost paradise by Friedrich Schiller and Franz Schubert can also be understood as a challenge to shape the future – and even more so from our point of view today than in their era. How should the world become “more fair” unless we do something about it? Who else should do it if not we ourselves? “The died-out meadow mourns, no godhead comes before my eyes” (Schiller): people felt even at that time – over and over – that they were godforsaken. And today? Who or what in a disenchanted world shall enkindle the intelligence of hearts? How shall we set about achieving the very necessary realisation of that great dream, a future society based on empathy? How can we make up for what we have done to each other and to the planet? Where can we find the courage to take responsibility for the further progress of evolution? And the certainty that the meanwhile invisible will become visible?
