J.S. Bach’s motets are an indisputable high point in the output of the great Thomaskirche cantor. Even that other genius, W.A. Mozart, was moved to tears when he gazed with his own eyes on the separate hand-written parts during his visit to Leipzig – an anecdote that we in turn find highly moving.
Traditionally, since the re-evaluation of Bach’s oeuvre at the beginning of the last century, the motets have been placed at the centre of his choral universe – indeed, choirs can really show off their technical brilliance in various passages, and moreover these scores are a joy to perform regardless of one’s style of interpretation
