Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5 by the National Symphony Orchestra is the second of three installments of the orchestra’s complete Beethoven Symphony Cycle conducted by Music Director Gianandrea Noseda.

Music Director Gianandrea Noseda on the second instalment of the NSO’s Beethoven cycle: “The second part of this Beethoven cycle is both a snapshot in time and an argument for the universality of Beethoven’s music. Captured in this beautiful recording is the collective feeling of gratitude and joy in reconnecting with audiences and with each other during the first full season back after the pandemic. It also captures how Beethoven’s music contains universal truths that can affect us anew even though these works were written more than 200 years ago. Incredible music-making and playing by the musicians of the NSO.”

Beethoven Symphony No. 4 was recorded live on January 20, 21 and 22, 2022 and Beethoven Symphony No. 5 was recorded live on January 13, 15 and 16, 2022 in the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. The recording was Produced by Blanton Alspaugh and Engineered and Mastered by Mark Donahue from Soundmirror. Nigel Boon and Genevieve Twomey from the National Symphony Orchestra are the Executive Producers of this album.

Music Director Gianandrea Noseda will lead the National Symphony Orchestra as they complete their Beethoven cycle, with performances of the remaining symphonies as part of the NSO’s Beethoven & American Masters festival, May 12–June 3, 2023. The first instalment, Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 was released in Stereo and 5 Channel Surround Sound at NativeDSD on September 16, 2022. The first and second instalments were recorded in the 2021–2022 season.

Press reviews

(…) It is said that if the first impression is good, half the battle is won. Although we must wait for the next volumes before giving thumbs up, one might assume that on the basis of this release, this new Beethoven cycle will be able to favourably compete with the better half thus far available. And knowing that no effort is spared to produce the best possible sound, it deserves already serious consideration. The Ninth Symphony (and final volume?) is scheduled to be played from June 1 through June 3, 2023. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
