When Down (PureDSD)

My Reel Club Hunnia Records returns to Native DSD with their newest release, a contemporary Jazz album titled When Down.  It features Istvan Grencso (Woodwinds, Saxophone), Barnabas Dukay (Piano – Klavins Una Corda M189), Aurel Hollo (Percussion), and Adriana Kalafszky (Soprano).

Barnabas Dukay plays a Una Corda M189 piano from Klavins Pianos on the album.  It is one of only 5 pianos of its kind that will ever be built.  The piano features One String Per Note (una corda principle), Open Body Design (no cabinet), Double-Layered Soundboard of selected, solid mountain spruce, rib-less, Active Soundboard Surface of 1,748 m2, Tone Modulator (various metal Strips), Steel Frame, 88-Key Range (A2 to C5) and Lowest Bass String of 1,418 mm. The M189 is 189cm high (206cm with legs and wheels), 220cm wide, 70cm deep (100cm with legs and wheels), and weighs 550 kg.

Nothing that is industrial or passionate, not a supplement, production, or commissioned work, nothing that simply matches stylistic conventions, nothing resulting from a lack of will …but simply to leave behind our compulsion to meet expectations; to enter the inexhaustible realm of sounds. To plunge into indescribable tonal colors, forgetting matters of methodology, system, and schooling – flashy fashions, the zeitgeist … As if we were floating on the silky surface of a lake, arms wide open, letting ourselves to be carried to unknown, unexplored spaces, into the unexpected, at times the surprising realm of possibilities opened up by unrehearsed forms. Into the mysteries of irretrievable moments and musical situations.

I am grateful to God for letting me share this exciting and spontaneous creative process with such unique musicians as Barnabás Dukay, Aurél Holló, and (last but not least) Adriána Kalafszky. I am thankful that they accepted my invitation to this project. Their personalities and musical preparation have been essential for the conception and creation of this musical fabric.
