Cities and Deserts started as fragments of songs written by Gabriel Zucker primarily in New York City during 2018 and 2019. It became a completed suite of music in 2020, in the New Mexico desert, at the height of the Covid 19 pandemic.

The album features pianist Gabriel Zucker and percussionist Attila Gyarfas. Attila Gyárfás and Gabriel Zucker have been making music since they met in 2017 in New York. Their duo infuses sonic and rhythmic freedom into complex, maximalist compositions.

Cities and Deserts was recorded on October 13, 2021 at SuperSize Recording Studio in Budapest, Hungary. Cities and Deserts is a Pure DSD 256 Stereo recording. It was recorded Live to DSD 256 by Gabor Halasz using the Hapi Analog to Digital Converter from Merging Technologies. The album was produced by Robert Zoltan Hunka and mastered by Tom Caulfield.
