Born For Passion marks the return of the Budafok Dohnanyi Orchestra conducted by Gabor Hollerung to NativeDSD Music. It follows their earlier album Sound Of Movies. Both are Stereo DSD 256 recordings from Hunnia Records that are available at the NativeDSD Music store.
The album is a Pure DSD release at NativeDSD. It is available in Stereo DSD 64, DSD 128, DSD 256, and DSD 512. The DSD 64, DSD 128, and DSD 512 editions of the album were created by NativeDSD Mastering Engineer Tom Caulfield using Signalyst’s HQ Player Pro 4 Mastering Software.
Like in many other Eastern European countries, the 19th century saw an increase in the need for a stronger national and cultural identity in Hungary. It was in this period that Hungarian national music was born, for which the basic material was provided by the “bands” of gipsy musicians of the century. Based partly on verbunkos (19th century recruiting music in folklore style) and partly on gypsy music, this folklore was a source of inspiration for every European composer.
One of the most outstanding composers of the era, Franz Liszt was an Austrian-German cosmopolitan, but in his art and deeds he clearly declared himself Hungarian. He was also one of the fathers of Romantic thinking in music. In his symphonic poems depicting ideals, emotions, and images, musical themes are various musical characters derived from a single musical thought – with this practice he laid down one of the most important foundation stones of 19th century composition.
Les Préludes is and remains one of Liszt’s epochal works until today, casting, as its program suggests, the struggles of life and, in a Faustian sense, the conflicts of creative work into music. Another aspect why this work of Liszt’s is significant is that through the musical logic of the piece the simple musical thought makes an effortless, organic journey to apotheosis, one of the key ideas of Romanticism.

Positive Feedback
Quite an enjoyable variety of excellent music for large orchestra, all of which is very nicely performed by the Budafok Dohnani Orchestra under Gabor Hollerung.
I am particularly taken with their performances of Dohnányi’s Symphonic Minutes and Kodaly’s Dances of Galánta. In my opinion, these are as good as any performances I have heard (interpretative choices aside). They have a delightful piquancy that is so often missing from other performances.
…it is the utter transparency of the Pure DSD256 capture from the microphones that is most striking. I’ll admit it. I’m a sound junkie. I LOVE excellence in the recorded sound quality. And this recording delivers in spades. Highly recommended for all three important aspects of a great album: the music, the performances, and the sound quality.
