The PaTRAM Institute Singers return to NativeDSD Music with their third DSD Stereo and DSD Multichannel album on Reference Records. With A Hymn of Praise to the Mother of God — Georgy Vasilevich Sviridov (1915–1998) has positioned himself as the principal composer of vocal and choral music during the Soviet Era (1917–1991).
After completing his studies under Dmitry Shostakovich, Sviridov shi?ed his creative energies away from instrumental music in a conscious effort to promote a national culture through the written word. An ardent and meticulous reader of Russian poetry and Orthodox hymns, he often extrapolates textual phrases that inspire his musical imagination.
Such is the case with the A Hymn of Praise; Sviridov draws words from various places in the Akathistos Hymn to the Theotokos to create his own, personalized musical icon. The piece utilizes a vintage Sviridov technique—“the dynamic in the static”—slow-moving chord structures that allow the listener to experience vast acoustical spaces.

(…) every single track (including the opening burst of carillon bells from the St Alexander Nevsky Diocesan Cathedral’s bell-ringer, Peter Lukianov) is worth hearing.
