Talented cellist Michael Kevin Jones returns to NativeDSD with Cantabile Vol. 1, another stunning album. Along with Henry Wong Doe on piano, this album is a rediscovery of music for cello and piano. All of the selections on the album are World Premiere Recordings. The album is a DSD Exclusive, Not Available on SACD release.
Anton (or Antonio) Diabelli was an Austrian music publisher, editor and composer. Best known in his time as a publisher. His ‘Grand Cello Sonata op. 92 ‘ has never been recorded until now. ‘Rediscover’ this music after centuries of being hidden.
Bernhard Romberg was a famous, touring virtuoso cellist. Critics called him the “Hero of all Violoncellists, the King of All Virtuosos.” What might be surprising to some is the lasting impact Romberg has had on both instruments and players.
Michael Henkel was born in Fulda Germany. He was a composer and organist who lived and worked his whole life in Thüringen. Surprisingly and unfairly almost unknown today, he wrote this fabulous, highly melodic and virtuosic ‘Piano and Cello’ sonata. ‘Rediscover’ it in Cantabile vol 1.

A wonderfully curated album of first recordings by composers Michael Henkel, Anton Diabelli and Bernard Romberg. Cellist Michael Kevin Jones strikes just the right balance of virtuoso brilliance and poignant lyricism in his playing, sensitively supported by Henry Wong Doe. Of particular note is the energy and intensity both players bring to the Grand Cello Sonata of Diabelli, with Wong Doe’s fleet finger work a feature in the Allegretto Scherzando movement. This collection of rarely performed woks for cello and piano is a must-have for musicians and music lovers.
