Lorelei Ensemble is a dynamic chamber vocal ensemble based in Boston, committed to the creation, cultivation, and performance of a fresh and fearless repertoire for women’s voices. Critically-acclaimed by the New York Times as “warm, lithe, and beautifully blended” and the Boston Globe as “audacious and impressive,” Lorelei is quickly gaining recognition as one of the country’s most exciting and forward-thinking contemporary ensembles.
Impermanence, their third studio album, is a brilliant collection; thoughtfully crafted by Artistic Director, Beth Willer, and performed with riveting intensity and grace, and masterfully captured by the Sono Luminus team.
And don’t forget that this is NEW music. Impermanence is the first all-female recording of any of Du Fay’s isorhythmic and cantilena motets (15c), and only the second recording of selections from the anonymous Turin Manuscript (14c) and Takemitsu’s Wind Horse (1966). The premiere recording of Peter Gilbert’s Tsukimi (commissioned for Lorelei in 2013) is the centerpiece and inspiration for this album and its concept. This breathtaking work features 8 miniatures on Japanese waka poetry, each featuring a member of the ensemble, and contemplating the moon as a symbol of impermanence. Truly, it is a groundbreaking work!
