This album is entirely devoted to the harpsichord music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685- 1750).
Two pieces were recorded earlier, but on different instruments, my Taskin (1669/1979) and my Giusti (1679/1977). The Prelude, Fugue and Allegro BWV 998 originally had the title ‘Preludio pur Luth o Cembal’ and takes us back to the origin of harpsichord music, music for lute with many broken chords, the so-called ‘Stile Brisé’
After a splendid Prelude we hear a Da capo Fuga, in which the first part is repeated at the end; the central part is once again in the Stile Brisé.
The work ends with a lively Allegro. The name ‘French Suites’ does not derive from Bach but from Marpurg, probably because all kinds of ‘Galanteries’ were added in later versions.
